The territorial police in Kampala are hunting for suspected kidnappers of a South African Uber driver who was living in Uganda.

The incident occurred on July 31, 2024, in the Bandogo zone of Makindye division, Kampala.

The police have identified the victim as Amos Masoga Morubara, a 40-year-old South African national who was abducted and tortured from near Munyonyo as he was on his way to the airport.

In an interview with ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, on August 2, 2024, he said that the victim was later rescued by Uganda police after working with his brother in South Africa following a video he had posted on social media.

He said that the police are searching for Morubara’s kidnappers, who are currently still at large, adding that the victim had been living in Uganda since May this year.

“We have established that Morubura arrived in Uganda on May 28, 2024, and had been staying with friends,” Owoyesigyire said.

According to Owoyesigyire, upon abduction, the kidnappers sought a ransom of ZAR100,000 (approximately Ugx 20 million) from his family to have him released.

The police’s action comes after Morubura’s brother in South Africa shared a video on social media that went viral, bringing attention to security. Morubura’s brother was later called by the police Flying Squad Unit seeking additional information.

Uganda police have called upon anyone with information about the kidnappers to contact them.
