President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has tasked leaders from the Bukedi sub region to mobilize residents on the best practices while using the wetlands to earn a livelihood.
While meeting the area local leaders from the region during a meeting held in Butaleja district on Saturday, November 9th, 2024, the President said wetland should be preserved.
According to the President, a large wetland area in Bukedi region has been encroached upon by the residents. He guided that the leaders should mobilize local residents to abandon rice growing in the wetlands and embrace fish farming.
The president noted that the government is consulting on the possibility of supporting residents in establishing fish ponds.
“Fish ponds should be dug at the edge of the wetlands but not in the middle. You can make more money from fish farming,” the president said.
Richard Oseku, the Member of Parliament for Kibale County in Pallisa district, while presenting a joint motion, asked the government to speed up the process to establish a starch factory in the region, a move that will escalate the cassava market for the farmers.
In their memorandum, the local leaders further asked the government to upgrade two major roads, including the Nagongere-Busolwe and Busolwe-Namutumba roads, which they said have high economic values for the region.
The meeting was part of President Museveni’s one-week mobilization tour of the Bukedi sub region on wealth creation.
