President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has donated the sum of one hundred million shillings to support the Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization, SACCO, formed by the first cohort of the Kiswahili class.

While presiding over the graduation of the first cohort of the Kiswahili class (over 350 learners) at Kyambogo University playgrounds on Thursday, October 24th, 2024, President Museveni promised to keep supporting the idea of promoting Swahili in Uganda and Africa.

Museveni further urged Ugandans to embrace Swahili as a language to promote unity.
“Swahili is not a language for one tribe but a language that can be used to promote unity in the region and Africa,” Museveni added.

According to Namara Moses, the cohort coordinator, the support from the president will enable the team group to coordinate different activities and also use the money for wealth creation.

“We are happy for the support, and we pledge to promote Swahili as a language wherever we go, and we shall be Swahili ambassadors.

The Swahili class of 2024 has been trained for a full year and today graduated over 350 students who started as a small group at the NRM secretariat.

Richard Todwong, the NRM Secretary General, said the next cohort of the Kiswahili class started on October 2nd, 2024, and will also take 12 months.

The graduates visited Zanzibar and Tanzania to boost their Swahili language-speaking skills.
