King Charles has confirmed that he will attend the COP28 environmental conference, which is being held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, where he will deliver the first major climate speech of his reign, having been invited by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
According to Buckingham Palace, the King will “take the opportunity to have meetings with regional leaders” while he is there.
Last year, the King didn’t attend the summit in Egypt, having been blocked from going by then-prime minister Liz Truss, who felt it was “not the right occasion” for Charles to attend so soon after his accession.
While the King is in Dubai, he will attend a reception to launch the inaugural COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, Buckingham Palace said.
“The King will be present at an inaugural reception for the COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum while he is in Dubai,” Buckingham Palace stated.
To accelerate climate and environmental solutions and drive delivery and results, world leaders will be joined by leaders in business, finance, and philanthropy for a two-day forum that runs concurrently with the main event.
Since his time as Prince of Wales, King Charles has been an outspoken supporter of environmental causes and a pioneer of sustainability.
His presence at COP28 is a definite indication that, in his capacity as monarch, he will keep pushing environmental issues.
