The government is set to construct the Katuna-Ryakarima-Muko highway in the western districts of Kabale and Rubanda.

Speaking as the chief guest during the fund-raising drive held at Rubaya Secondary School to build Rubaya Church of Uganda on Sunday, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced the government’s commitment to upgrade the road.

She noted that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has set aside some 70 million dollars to finance the construction works on the Katuna-Ryakarimira-Muko road.

According to her, the government is set to announce the contractor that has been awarded the contract to build the road.

The Prime Minister’s announcement was in response to a request from the Minister of State for Trade, Industry, and Cooperatives, David Bahati, to make a clarification on the progress of construction works on this road.

She attributed the delays in construction to procurement, adding that the government will soon announce the contractor.

According to Minister Bahati, the upgrade of this road will enhance easy access to local markets, health centers, and educational facilities and improve public transportation in the region.

Prime Minister Nabbanja donated Ugx30 million towards the construction of the church. During the function, which was presided over by Rt Rev Gaddie Akanjuna, Bishop of the Diocese of Kigezi, a total of Ugx 156 million and some bags of cement were contributed in cash and in pledges.

The road measures some 26 kilometers stretching from Katuna, at the international border with Rwanda up to south of Kabale. From there, the road takes a general north-westerly direction, looping around the southern shores of Lake Bunyonyi.

It passes between the Rwandan border to the west and the western shores of the lake to the east. The road then continues northwards for another 36 kilometres to end at Muko.
