The government of Uganda has officially launched new driving license fees for motorcycle riders following a directive from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni aimed at making licensing more affordable.
During the launch on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, in Kampala, the Ministry of Works and Transport announced that the revised fee is now set at UGX 100,000 for a one-year license, significantly reducing the previous costs that ranged from over UGX 300,000 and had drawn widespread criticism from boda boda operators.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, “all riders are required to complete training from a licensed driving school before obtaining their licenses,” ensuring that those entrusted with riding on the roads are properly trained and qualified.
This move is expected to enhance road safety and compliance among motorcycle riders, many of whom have faced legal challenges due to high licensing fees that previously exceeded UGX 300,000.
The government hopes that these changes will ease the financial burden on riders and also promote responsible riding practices across the country.
