In a resounding display of dedication towards combatting cancer, the Government of Uganda is fervently working to establish Regional Cancer Centres across the nation, ushering in a new era of accessible and efficient healthcare services. This landmark endeavor underscores the government’s unwavering commitment to improving the well-being of all Ugandans, especially in the realm of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. A pivotal stride in this mission was witnessed as the Board Members of the Uganda Cancer Institute recently embarked on a visit to the newly erected center in Gulu.

Anticipation is rampant as the Gulu Cancer Institute, a monumental achievement, prepares to open its doors to the public in the near future. As a testament to the government’s dedication, this state-of-the-art facility boasts a proficient and dedicated staff complement, backed by cutting-edge diagnostic equipment, funded entirely by the Ugandan government. The establishment of this institute is set to revolutionize healthcare in the Northern region of Uganda, addressing a significant hurdle—delayed diagnoses—by positioning essential services in closer proximity to the people they serve.

Following this initial success, the Ugandan government is starting a massive initiative to set up similar centres in key locations all over the nation. Regions like West Nile, Mbale, and Mbarara are poised to immensely benefit from these forthcoming centres, which promise to amplify the nation’s cancer-fighting capabilities while fostering a comprehensive network of care.

Uganda’s commitment to preventative measures remains unwavering. A formidable increase in screening services for cervical cancer, for instance, has been achieved. This includes a remarkable upsurge in Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) testing sites, rising from 16 to an impressive 62 the FY 2021/2022. This extensive network of testing sites has proven instrumental in early detection and treatment, significantly reducing the risk of developing cervical cancer. Encouragingly, a noteworthy 25% of women aged 30 to 49 years underwent cervical cancer screening, a testament to the growing awareness and accessibility of these critical services.

In yet another triumph, the immunisation of young girls against cervical cancer is gaining momentum. Impressively, the first dose of HPV vaccination achieved a coverage rate of 105% for ten-year-old girls. Furthermore, a commendable 56% of these girls received the second dose, securing full immunization—a remarkable feat that positions Uganda at the forefront of global cervical cancer prevention efforts.

Strategic infrastructure development remains a cornerstone of Uganda’s commitment. The successful completion and commissioning of the Regional Oncology Centre in Gulu in December 2022 stands as a testament to this vision. Looking ahead, the imminent commencement of construction for the Mbale Regional Oncology Centre in this Financial Year signifies yet another step towards realizing accessible, quality cancer care for all Ugandans. Reassuringly, substantial progress has also been made in securing land, conducting environmental impact assessments, and advancing designs for the upcoming Mbarara Centre.

As the Government of Uganda remains steadfast in its battle against cancer, the establishment of Regional Cancer centres and the relentless pursuit of comprehensive healthcare infrastructure exemplify a nation devoted to its citizens’ well-being. With each stride, Uganda propels itself towards a future where the scourge of cancer is met with unwavering resilience, bolstered by advanced facilities and a steadfast commitment to the health of its people.
