Government Secures $30 Million Loan for Heart Institute Upgrade

Matia Kasija, Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Government of Uganda, has signed a loan agreement with the Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad, for the construction and equipping of the Uganda Heart Institute.

Kasija, today, Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at the ministry of finance offices, signed a loan agreement worth USD 30 million, which will specifically support civil works, equipment, and furniture for the Heart Institute.

“On behalf of the people of the Republic of Uganda, I want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the beneficial and cordial cooperation with the SFD,” Kasija said.

H.E. Sultan Al-Marshad said that the project will play a huge role in supporting the healthcare sector by improving the number of patients receiving medical care.

Jane Ruth Aceng, Minister of Health, said that the Uganda Heart Institute project will have a 222-bed capacity, two fully equipped emergency admittance care facilities, intensive care and emergency services covering catheterization procedure rooms, x-rays, CT scans, and five fully fledged clinical and research laboratories.

“Your substantial financial support will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape of Uganda,” Aceng said.

She noted that, for the last 40 years, SFD has financed seven development projects in Uganda worth USD 81 million in different sectors of Uganda.
