The secrets as to why a renowned local musician, Bobi Wine, recently boycotted a concert dubbed “Legend in Gold” organized by his long-term mate, Dr. Jose Chameleon, have leaked.
On Saturday, August 31, 2024, Jose Chameleon proved his skills and confirmed to revelers that indeed he is the true chameleon and still the talent title holder within the region during a concert held at the Kampala Serena’s Victoria conference hall.
During the concert, Chameleon sang his song Bweleere and repeatedly said, “Bagamba Mzee agende, Fe abagezi tugamba asigale,” which is translated as “They say Mzee (H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni) should go, but for us the intelligent ones, we insist that he should stay in power for the good of this country.”
Such a statement was meant to send a clear message to his long-time music mate, Bobi Wine, who is accused of being used by the West to dismantle NRM from power.
Despite his exclusive stage performance that kept fans enthusiastically excited and fellow musicians including Bebe Cool, Ronald Mayinja, and Mesach Ssemakula, among others, impeccably entertained for hours, Bobi Wine, aka Robert Kyagulanyi, chose to remain bitter than the Double Black Johnny Walker whisky when he boycotted the event.
Bobi Wine reportedly led a crusade of fellow faded local musicians Eddie Yawe, Geoffrey Lutaaya, and Fire Base crew musicians into boycotting the legendary concert to celebrate Chameleon’s 25 years of good music.
Aggrey Kilembeka from Bwaise, a Kampala suburb, Bobi Wine could not attend a concert of someone who supports the ruling party (the National Resistance Movement), whose leader is President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has given Wine a sleepless night.
In July 2024, during the celebrations of President Museveni’s legacy and achievements at the Kololo independence grounds, Chameleon went straight to the president’s tent, shook his hand, and had a brief talk with him while he sang Basiima Ogenze, implying that Ugandans will appreciate Museveni after he is no longer in power.
According to some musicians, such incidences have made Wine fall out with Chameleon and other artists who support NRM.
Elliot Mukasa, a former guitarist at Afrigo Band, described Bobi Wine as a selfish musician who doesn’t wish other artists success.
“Bobi Wine jokes a lot. Some musicians like Chameleon and Bebe Cool are self-made. Music is their talent and like food to their soul. Even when they did not study music in school, they have won accolades all over. But for him as an MDD graduate, he never brought any award home,” Mukasa said.
Chameleon proved that he is still the music icon as he took fans through a series of his songs for about five hours in an event that attracted artists like Red San, Ferooz, Bushoke, Mun G, Nina Rose, Pallaso, Melody, DJ Michael, Vamposs, Weasle, designer Latif Madoi, promoter Abitex, and many other socialites and celebrities.
