πΊπ¬Β President Museveni assents to Anti-Homosexuality law
πPresident Museveni has signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law. Parliament earlier this month reassessed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2023 and passed it with amendments to four clauses as had been directed by the President.
βPresident Museveni has executed his constitutional mandate as prescribed by Article 91(3) (a) of the 1995 ConstitutionΒ and assented to the Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023,β Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among said in a tweet on Monday, adding that,
“As the Parliament of Uganda, we have answered the cries of our people. We have legislated to protect the sanctity of family as per Article 31 of the Constitution of Uganda. We have stood strong to defend our culture and aspirations of our people as per objectives 19 & 24 of national objectives and directive principles of state policy,β the tweet reads further.
πΊπ¬Β Light vehicles will start using Katonga bridge this week – UNRA
πThe Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced that all pedestrians and light vehicles will start using a section of River Katonga Bridge this week on the Kampala-Masaka highway. Allan Ssempebwa, the UNRA spokesperson says those cleared to use the bridge include pedestrians, bicyclists, boda bodas, commuter taxis, salon cars and buses.
βOne lane at the bridge is now ready for light traffic and motorists will start using it by the end of this week. However, we ask all motorists to exercise maximum patience as they approach the bridge because traffic from opposition directions will be using one lane in the meantime as the contractor continues with the repair works,” Ssempebwa said.
πΊπ¬ President Museveni orders screening of fishermen on Lake Victoria
πPresident Museveni has ordered the screening of all fishermen on Lake Victoria, particularly at Kalangala Islands, to check the rampant illegal fishing activities on the lake. The President said the Government will not inject more money into cage farming before the lake is cleared of illegal fishermen. He also urged the public to be cautious of new people in the business.
βThis [lake] is like a mine that doesnβt have rules and regulations. There must be control. We should own this. Fishermen must have permits and be fully registered. I have given you two months, I shall come back, we should not allow outsiders to destroy our thing, we should organize the fishing ground,” the President said.
πΊπ¬ BUNDIBUGYO: Schools delay to reopen for one week due to Measles outbreak
πSchools in Bundibugyo will delay to reopen for one week due to a Measles outbreak. The one-week delay is to enable the district to carry out a mass vaccination campaign for children aged 5 and below. The outbreak has been reported in the subcounties of Busaru, Tokwe, Bubandi, Kisubba, Bukonzo, Busunga, Nyahuka Town and Kaghema Town Councils. According to the District Health Officer, Dr. Christopher Kiyita, 119 cases have been recorded. The disease was first confirmed in the district after the results of 4 out of 5 submitted to the Uganda Viral Research Institute tested positive on April 26.
πΊπ¬Β MITOOMA: 16 year-old girl throws her baby into river
πA 16-year-old girl has been arrested in Mitooma District for allegedly throwing into the river, her one year-old baby. According to Martial Tumusiime, Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, the incident occurred at Nyakatoma cell in Mayanga sub-county. The body of the victim was discovered and retrieved from the river on weekend. The suspectβs name has been withheld since she is a minor. The suspect allegedly bowed to pressure from her parents, who reportedly said they did not want the grandchild. Tumusiime stated that the parents of the girl will be summoned to give statements during the investigation, and if found to be involved in the incident, they may as well face charges.

πTraders dealing in silverfish, commonly known as mukene, in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District have raised concern over the scarcity of the fish species. The traders blamed this on the rising water levels on Lake Victoria, andΒ that since the year began, fishermen have not been catching silver fish. Ms. Anna Komakech, a silverfish vendor, blamed the rising water levels on rain yet Mukene emits a foul odor when it comes in contact with rain.

π Agen Patrick, a resident of Loka Alaga B’ cell, Ogwangacuma ward, Aboke Town Council was shot by a Police Officer, one Wafula Emmanuel, after refusing to give him a bribe. It is said Mr. Agen had come withΒ his son to the Police station to report a case of assault after being beaten by one Okello over a land dispute.
βAfter reporting the case to the police officer, he demanded money for Police form 3 from Agen’s son but Agen told him that the form is for free and he canβt pay money for it, thatβs where tension started from. The Police Officer then shot two bullets in the left leg of Agen Patrick,” source said.

π KENYA: Russian Foreign Affairs Minister arrives in Nairobi
π Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Kenya. Moscowβs Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Mr Lavrovβs arrival in Nairobi on Monday morning, without giving further details on the visit.Β The Russian embassy in Nairobi in a tweet said this would be a very fruitful week for Russia-Kenya bilateral relations.Β Mr Lavrovβs visit comes days after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba made an African tour last week.
π DRC: Two rangers shot dead in Virunga Park
π Two guards at Virunga National Park have been killed in the DRC, the latest bloodshed to rock the preserve designated as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. In a statement on Sunday, the park said the two guards βwere shot and succumbed to their injuriesβ in Nyamusengera, a section near the Edward River, which marks the frontier with Uganda. The Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN) said the attack was likely to be blamed on the Mai-Mai, an armed group. Armed militias have overtime targeted rangers and tourists at Virunga park, with this murder being the latest.

π Several African Presidents and other foreign dignitaries have arrived in Nigeria for the inauguration of Bola Tinubu as the 16th President of Nigeria. Nigerian local media stated on Monday that about 20 African leaders are expected in Abuja. Rwandaβs President Paul Kagame, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune are among leaders who arrived on Sunday.Β Also in Abuja is the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, the President of the Republic of Congo Brazzaville, Denis Sassou Nguesso, the President of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco EmbalΓ³ and Sierra Leoneβs President Julius Maada Bio. The President of Burundi, Γvariste Ndayishimiye, the transitional President of Chad Mahamat DΓ©by, the President of Niger Republic, Mohamed Bazoum and President Nana Akufo-Ado of Ghana are also in Nigeria forΒ theΒ ceremony.
