The Electoral Commission has kicked off a national exercise to demarcate electoral areas and reorganize polling stations in preparation for the 2026 national elections.
While addressing participants who are currently attending the workshop for the Kampala region on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at Hotel Africana in Kampala, Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, the EC Chairperson, said the move aims to foster a transparent electoral process.
He emphasised the Commission’s constitutional mandate to ensure regular, free, and fair elections.
He added that the 2026 General Elections Roadmap entails the key activities and timelines for the upcoming general elections, with some aspects adjusted to match the current changes in the process.
Justice Byabakama also noted that the Commission will begin the demarcation of electoral areas, starting in August 2024, for directly elected councillors, women councillors, and councillors representing special interest groups.
On the reorganisation of polling stations, Justice Byabakama emphasised the need to ensure manageable voter numbers and accessibility.
This, he says, will address new administrative units, voter growth, and relocating and splitting polling stations as needed.
The EC Secretary, Leonard Mulekwah, said the 2026 general election will mark the fifth under a multiparty political dispensation.
“The EC has made commendable improvements in planning and conducting elections,” he stated.
Under this arrangement, the EC has embarked on organising regional workshops to engage with all the stakeholders.
The Electoral Commission estimates that there will be more than 40,000 polling stations during the 2026 general elections.
