The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Ruhakana Rugunda has released a statement to Parliament in response to allegations that were made by some Parliamentarians to regard that he and his son Kwame Rugunda are involved in a number of Ponzi schemes.
The Parliamentarians had accused the PM and his son of fraud connected to a taskforce know as the national taskforce on the fourth industrial revolution.
A number of Ugandans were last year fleeced of by various Ponzi schemes under the auspice of crypto currency such as Onecoin, whose proprietors ran away with billions of monies after the schemes collapsed.
However, the latest accusations point to lack of literacy on the issue by the parliamentarians and outright ignorance on the advent of Block Chain technology and Crypto Currency. This is particularly worrying for us as a country as it is this same group of people that are supposed to formulate policy that would help the country to successfully adopt and regulate the technology.
At this very juncture Uganda stands to lose out on this development and be left behind by other countries and communities. This is also another case of parliamentarians attempting to arm-twist and blackmail government officials.
The fact that the legislators chose to attack the Minister’s son also indicates the lack of professionalism and how the know no bounds to their low standards of politicking. It is as though the children of government officials should never engage in any activities especially on the national level. Kwame Rugunda is a different entity from his father and as thus has every right to engage in any activity as he so wishes without having to give accountability to anyone.
As such, the parliamentarians can invite him to come and pour light on his private work through a working group or committee without dragging any one down at the same time. We as a country need to be more open minded especially towards emerging technological trends if we are to achieve our development goals.
This worrying trend has left many Ministers and officials inert and inactive over fears of reprimand on the floor of parliament. This has led to a tarnished government image in the light of many outstanding issues.
