China has pledged to provide more scholarships and support for Uganda’s education sector, aiming to help more Ugandan youth access educational opportunities in China.
This was announced by the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, during the launch of the Friendship, Culture, and Unity Day at the Seeta High School-Mbalala campus in Mukono district on August 1, 2024.
Ambassador Lizhong said that China will continue focusing on three key initiatives to support Africa, including Uganda, in the areas of industrial development, agricultural modernization, and education. He further noted that the upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September will discuss collaborations between China and African countries in all fields for the next three years.
“We expect to work very closely with Uganda in all fields and take this good opportunity to deepen our friendship, including the cooperation in the fields of education and the youth,” Lizhong said.
He welcomed more Ugandan youths to come to China and take advantage of the educational opportunities.
This announcement builds upon China’s existing support for Ugandan education. In 2019, China offered 99 scholarships for Ugandan students to study in higher institutions in China, covering tuition fees, basic learning materials, accommodation, living allowance, medical expenses, and international airfare. Over the past three years, the Chinese government has also extended 1,200 short-term training opportunities and 250 scholarships to Ugandan students.
