The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gutierrez, has today, October 31st, held a virtual meeting with the President of Rwanda, HE. Paul Kagame, to strategize on how to de-escalate the insecurity in the Eastern DRC.

This was revealed on Monday by the Rwandan President through his official Twitter handle.

“A few hours ago, I had a good discussion with the UN Secretary General on the conflict in the Eastern DRC. The ways and means to de-escalate and address the issues to a peaceful end are with us, building on the Nairobi, Luanda, and other international efforts,” Kagame stated.

He has appealed to fellow regional leaders to take part in pacifying the DRC, saying the responsibility for de-escalating the situation lies in the regional block.

Rwanda has been accused by the Kinshasa government of supporting and backing M23 rebels operating in the Eastern DRC.

Similarly, the rebels also accused the Congolese government of mistreatment and discrimination based on their ethnic identity.

It should be noted that the M23 rebel group is composed of Interahamwe, or Congolese of Tutsi-Hutu origin living in the DRC.
