The government has announced plans to streamline the land purchasing process through the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development in order to eliminate rampant land purchasing fraud.
Judith Nabakooba, the Lands Minister, said this would be done by digitizing records in land management.
“The ministry is also working hard to ensure that we streamline land purchase and vilification processes as well as digitize all records in land management and administration,” Minister Nabakooba said.
The remarks were made on Sunday, October 30th, 2022, during the launch of a low-cost housing project in Naalya, Kampala, by the minister of lands, Judith Nabakooba, and Ibrahim Semaganda, the managing director of Build Net, a private company dealing in real estate management.
Minister Nabakooba urged land buyers to go through transparent procedures while buying and selling land, including involving a professional surveyor to verify land size and land title search in the registry office, among others.
Semaganda applauded the government’s move to reduce the cost of building materials through tax exemptions, which will definitely cause a drop in the cost of building.
He adds that this will convince the landlords to reduce the amount charged as rent, thus helping the low-income earners to secure houses for accommodation.
“The government intervention to reduce the cost of construction materials may be by reducing taxes, which will lower construction costs and houses will be rented cheaply to enable locals to access them at a lower cost,” Ibrahim said.
This comes after the government adopted the land digitization process in 2013, which has eradicated manual land registry since its inception in 1908.
The move, according to the ministry of lands, housing and urban development, intends to solve the public outcry about land grabbing and illegal land evictions.
