A police officer attached to the Field Force Unit (FFU) Department in Kisoro District, has been arrested for allegedly murdering an Indian businessman.

The suspect, identified as Eliod Gumizamu, attached to the Nyakabande Refugee Transit Centre, confessed that he was paid Ugx20m to kill Patel Kuntaj, a 24-year-old Indian national who operates a hardware shop in Kisoro municipality.

Gumizamu claimed he was hired by a certain businessman, whom he identified as Commnado 8.

The incident took place on Thursday.

The deceased died on Thursday afternoon at St Francis hospital in Mutolere, where he had been admitted due to excessive bleeding.

An eyewitness says that Gumizamu appeared with a group of unidentified men who entered the hardware shop in possession of a sack filled with some items, which later turned out to be a gun.

According to eye witnesses, moments later, a gunshot was heard, which at first, they didn’t take it seriously, thinking it was a car tire burst.

“We saw men entering the hardware store, and later we heard a sound. “At first we thought a car tire had burst but later realized it was a gunshot when a man walked out with a gun,” said the eye witness.

According to Kunjaj’s workers, Gumizamu pulled out a gun and shot Kunjaj in the chest. He then put the gun in a sack and boarded a motorcycle in an attempt to escape.

Gumizamu was immediately arrested by the workers of the deceased with the help of local residents who surrounded the place after hearing gunshots. The rest of the group members managed to escape.
