Uganda has continued to record a surge in the COVID 19 cases over the recent weeks.

Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance while addressing the press at the Media Center on Tuesday said government is concerned about the increasing cases of Covid19.

Minister attributed the surge in Uganda to non-complacency and behavioral change as citizens are acting like the virus had completely gone.

The Minister also stated that the positivity rate for Covid19 had gone down but has now risen.

“The positivity rate had dropped to less than 1%, but it has now increased to 5%, and this might mark the beginning of the fourth wave,” stated the minister.

Minister Baryomunsi noted that about 600 positive COVID19 cases weekly.

“We have noted that there has been a rise in the number of COVID19 cases since the last week of May this year. The average number of cases has increased from 20 cases per week between January and May to now over 600 cases per week,” he stated.

According to the Minister, government has ruled out possible additional lockdown but encouraged Ugandans to embrace adherence to COVID 19 SOPs.

“We are not saying we are going to go into lock-down. We are saying that we have to take extra precautions. There has been complacency and behavioral change as if COVID19 has completely gone, and yet it is still around,” Hon. Baryomunsi said.

He encouraged all Ugandans to get vaccinated and observe SOPs to avoid the fourth wave.

The answer to COVID19 is to observe SOPs, but most importantly, get vaccinated,” he said.
