The Speaker of Parliament, Annet Anita Among, has called for increased sensitization of residents to ensure public safety whenever a fuel tanker has overturned.
Among’s appeal followed the Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024 incident that occurred in Kigowa along the Kampala-Gulu Highway in which some 14 people died when a fuel tanker overturned and later exploded in flames.
While chairing the plenary session on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, Speaker Among expressed condolences to the families of those who have died.
Several properties, including motorcycles, shops, and houses, were destroyed during the fire incident.
Leader of Opposition, LOP Joel Ssenyonyi, asked the government to consider supporting the affected families.
He further cautioned residents against being reckless whenever such an incident occurs.
She added that such incidents point to the need to sensitize our locals on public safety during such incidences.
Ethel Naluyima, the Wakiso District Woman Representative (DWR), said that the death toll from the fire incident is still rising.
She also called for increased campaigns among the public to discourage people from acts of siphoning fuel from a tanker involved in an accident.
“It is regrettable that Ugandans have died. What I established is that over 35 people are dead and over 70 people were injured and were taken to Bombo Hospital, but they have now been referred to Kiruddu Hospital. Different homes and shops were affected, and many people who were in those shops died,” Naluyima noted.
