The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has issued guidelines for motorists transiting through the alternative route via Murchison Falls National Park after the government announced the temporary closure of the Karuma Bridge to all traffic for three months.
According to the statement issued by UWA on September 19, 2024, the transition is meant to ensure the safety of persons, protect wildlife, and preserve the park’s natural environment.
“There will be no entry fees charged for vehicles transiting through Tangi Bugungu gates via Bulisa Town Council for the period of three months up to December 31, 2024, when repairs on Karuma Bridge are expected to be completed,“ the statement read in part.
The statement also highlighted that Kichumbanyobo gate is dedicated to tourists visiting Murchison Falls National Park, and therefore all vehicles transiting this gate will be required to pay park entrance fees as per the UWA tariff.
UWA further added that motorists are encouraged to use the Masindi port ferry and the other ferries through Luwero Nakasongola Kafu—Rwenkunye.
UWA noted that the park is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and advised motorists to plan their journeys and strictly adhere to these hours.
“Transit visitors will only be allowed into the park not later than 6.00 pm to enable exit by 7.00 pm. Entry outside of these times is prohibited, and no exceptions will be made,“ the statement read.
The speed limit within Murchison Falls National Park is set at 40 km/h, and UWA emphasized that strict enforcement will be applied, adding that motorists caught speeding will face an immediate fine of UGX 100,000. In addition, motorists were reminded not to litter within the park, as violators will be liable to a fine of UGX 100,000.
The Karuma Bridge, which is a major gateway to northern Uganda and neighboring countries, will be shut down to traffic effective Monday, September 23, 2024, as highlighted by Gen Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, to ensure uninterrupted repairs.
The closure of the bridge made the Murchison Falls National Park Road the primary route to Northern Uganda.
UWA’s guidelines are aimed at safeguarding the park’s biodiversity and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors. UWA called upon motorists to comply with these guidelines for the benefit of Uganda’s natural heritage, the safety of travelers, and the convenience of tourists visiting the park.
