President Museveni to Launch Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program

President Museveni is set to launch the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Program (GKMA-UDP) on 10th September 2024 at Kira Municipal grounds.

According to Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, the Development program is a World Bank-funded infrastructure development program that aims to modernize road networks, improve connectivity, and foster economic growth within the metropolitan areas.

“This Program benefits from substantial financial backing, including a World Bank credit facility of about Shs 1.923 trillion, a grant of Shs 177.502 billion, and will receive co-financing of 40 million Euros (approximately US$42.66 million) from France and the government of Uganda”, Minister Kabanda said.

While addressing the press members at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on Friday, September 6, 2024, Kabanda revealed that the program has signed contracts with two municipalities including Mukono and Kira.

The minister added that the infrastructural works have been looted into 3: Lot one will cover Mbogo and Cyprian Kizito Roads (9.0 km) and Kungu-Bivanju Road (2.3 km). Lot two covers Anthony-Kame, Kame Annex, Albert Cook-Cathedral Rise, Kame-Nabuti-Katosi, Admin Link, Access Road, Link Road(8.68km) and Lot three covers Nasuuti-Nakabago-Ntawo, Bajjo-Seeta, Serado Link, Kigunga Link(9.72km).

The State Minister for Kampala City and Metropolitan Affairs Christopher Kyofatogabye said that the program draws lessons from previous projects and aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan.

It also aims at transforming Kampala into a well-planned, efficient urban center that supports sustainable economic development and improved quality of life for its residents.

Minister Kabanda added that the program is also in line with the NRM Manifesto 2021-2026 which reflects the Government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure roads in the Metropolitan area to support growth.
