The Uganda Police Force has issued guidelines regarding drowning prevention and safety measures during the rainy season.

On August 20, 2024, the police spokesperson, ACP Kituuma Rusoke, said it was critical to wear life jackets while traveling on water bodies.

“Always use life jackets when on or near water bodies; this can significantly increase survival chances during emergencies. Always be aware of changing weather conditions and avoid traveling in flooded areas,” Rusoke said.

He further highlighted that the public should be updated with local weather reports and heed warnings from authorities about potential flooding and unsafe water conditions.

Rusoke said the terrain beneath floodwaters can contain deep holes, significantly increasing drowning risks and urging the public to stay away from downed utility wires as electrical currents can travel through water.

Rusoke urges the communities to exercise extreme caution in flooded areas, as the terrain beneath the water can contain deep holes and other hazards that pose drowning risks.

He urged the public to take these warnings seriously and prioritize safety during the rainy season, as drowning remains a leading cause of premature death, particularly among young adults in Uganda.

On August 16, 2024, a 12-year-old girl named Brenda Nahula drowned while attempting to cross a trench filled with running water during a heavy downpour in Budaka District.
