The woes among the top leaders of the opposition National Unity Platform party have continued to deepen.

The latest is that legislators from the Buganda Caucus are furious with the Party President, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, for snubbing the 31st-anniversary celebrations of Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, which took place at Namirembe Cathedral on August 31, 2024.

The group, which is being led by MP Joyce Bagaala Ntwatwa, the Mityana District Woman Representative, expressed disappointment in the manner in which Kyagulanyi ignored Kabaka’s celebration and instead went to meet the Omukuka of the Bamasaba.

On Saturday, August 3, 2024, MP Bagaala convened a secret meeting in Rubaga Division, Kampala with a section of NUP top leaders, including MPs.

During this meeting, Kyagulanyi was largely accused of relying on the support of Baganda but giving very little to the Buganda Kingdom.

“Many people have branded NUP as a Baganda party, but even when we have big events at the Lubiri, Kyagulanyi has deliberately been ignoring such top cultural events for the past three years, yet he continues to enjoy support from Buganda loyalists,” said MP Bagaala.

According to MP Bagaala, Kyagulanyi’s presence at Namirembe Cathedral would have meant a lot to the Buganda supporters.

At the recent Kabaka 31st anniversary celebrations, many NUP leaders and other political party heads were in attendance to celebrate the life of Kabaka and his 31 years on the throne as the King of Buganda.

The celebrations came a few weeks after Kabaka had just returned from Namibia, where he had gone for treatment.

Kyagulanyi’s absence during key Buganda events doesn’t only raise questions within the NUP party establishment but also among other party supporters and Buganda loyalists who once labeled Kyagulanyi as Omubanda wa kabaka, which means the ghetto boy or gangster of the Kabaka.
