The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has assured the public that the country remains safe for commerce and tourism. Maj. Gen. Jackson Bakasumba, Chief of Joint Staff of the UPDF, conveyed this message during a bilateral meeting with the Italian Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Mauro Massoni,
During the meeting, held at the Ministry of Defence at Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters on May 14, 2024, in Mbuya, Kampala, Gen. Bakasumba emphasized the peaceful and secure environment that Uganda currently enjoys.
“The security of the country is very peaceful, and there is no cause for alarm,” he stated reassuringly.
The UPDF’s efforts in maintaining stability were recognized and commended by Maj. Gen. Bakasumba, who specifically thanked the Italian government for its significant support in various socio-economic transformation programs. The Italian Ambassador expressed gratitude for the opportunity to strengthen collaboration between the two countries, pledging to consolidate the existing partnership.
One key topic of discussion was the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which aims to restore peace and security in the region affected by extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
Maj. Gen. Bakasumba praised international and development partners for their efforts in Somalia and acknowledged the sacrifices made by the UPDF in contributing to the mission. Despite not sharing a border with Somalia, Uganda continues to play an integral role in the fight against terrorism in the region.
Addressing concerns about the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists, Maj. Gen. Bakasumba reassured attendees that the group has suffered significant degradation and can no longer pose a significant threat. He discussed the UPDF’s collaboration with the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo to neutralize the ADF’s capabilities.
“We have partnered with the DR Congo army to derail all ADF capabilities. We are doing well in the mountainous area and regret the unfortunate incident of the deaths of tourists in Kasese,” said Maj. Gen. Bakasumba.
The safety and security of tourists were emphasized during the meeting, with Maj. Gen. Bakasumba specifically highlighting Queen Elizabeth National Park as a safe destination for visitors. The joint efforts of Ugandan and Congolese forces have contributed to maintaining a secure environment for tourists in the region.
Among the delegates present at the meeting was the Italian Defence Attaché to Uganda, Col Marco Poddi, Col Younes Bagada, and Col William Kakuru, alongside other high-ranking officials.
This bilateral meeting between the UPDF and the Italian Ambassador serves as a testament to the commitment of Uganda and Italy to strengthen cooperation and security measures. With the UPDF ensuring a safe environment for business and tourism, Uganda continues to welcome visitors from around the world to experience its natural beauty and vibrant culture.
