The National Council of Sports (NCS) Assistant General Secretary, Joseph Oluga, has flagged off Rugby Cranes players selected for the high-performance Blue Bulls Rugby Camp in South Africa.

The flag-off was on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at NCS offices in Lugogo.

According to Oluga, the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Uganda Rugby Union and Blue Bulls Rugby Union aims towards high performance and up-skilling of coaches and players.

“The Memorandum of Understanding signed by these two unions will herald a partnership geared towards high performance, upskilling of coaches and players, and allowing Ugandan rugby to learn from one of the best unions in the world known for developing and producing some of the best talents in South African rugby and the world,” said Oluga.

Oluga also commended and congratulated URU and Blue Bulls Rugby Union on their historic partnership.

He stated that the new law clusters sports disciplines, with rugby being one of the priority sports.

“We have a new law that clusters sports disciplines, and rugby is among the priority sports. We encourage federations to develop their sports through such partnerships to fill the space the government may not have covered. Use this as a blessing to foster skill growth and enhance performance. As a government, we shall ensure you bring results to empower the rest,” Oluga stated.

The players selected for the first Blue Bulls/URU high-performance camp include Santos Senteza Prop, Conrad Wanyama Scrum Half, Ivan Kabagambe Prop, Byron Oketayot Flanker, Faraji Odugo Hooker, Eliphaz Emong 8th Man/Lock, and Sydney Gongodyo 8th Man/Lock.

The training program will be conducted by the Blue Bulls Rugby Union at their base in Pretoria. Plans were concluded when Blue Bulls president Willem Strauss visited the Uganda Rugby Union in November last year.
