Police in Kanungu has arrested a conductor of the Baby Coach Bus Company for trafficking child refugees into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The Police Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga, identified the conductor as Farida Nabakooza, 37 years old and a resident of Bulenga, Wakiso District.

Enanga said that the children were being trafficked to join a rebel group termed “Twiraneho” meaning “let us fight for ourselves”.

“On November 6, 2023, at around 8 a.m., the suspect received the five children and handed them over to the conductor of the Baby Coach Bus, who knew where to drop them,” Enanga said.

According to Enanga, two of the victims, one of whom was identified as Christine Muvula, a 17-year-old refugee and pupil at United Nursery and Primary School in Nakivale Refugee Camp, escaped and were reunited with their mother.

“The other three victims, identified as Prince Bisesa, 15 years old, Tezero, and Sabikoze, are still missing,” Enanga added.

Police are working with Eastern DRC officials to locate the missing children and have the suspects who are on the run arrested.
