Four suspects involved in the murder of Joan Kagezi, a former Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, were arraigned before the Nakawa Court today, November 6, 2023. The accused individuals, identified as Daniel Kiseeka Kiwanuka, John Kibuuka, John Musajjage (also known as Mubiru), and Mugonole Nasur Abdullah, faced charges of terrorism and murder.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo, sanctioned the charges based on the state’s allegations that on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Nakawa division, Kampala, the four suspects directly participated in or were complicit in the attack and murder of Joan Kagezi. The attack was believed to be driven by intentions to influence the government, intimidate the public or a segment thereof, and serve political, religious, social, or economic purposes. The suspects allegedly acted indiscriminately, showing no regard for the safety of others or property.

Joan Kagezi, who headed the International Crimes Department at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), was tragically killed on March 30, 2015, while driving home.

The arraignment signifies a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for the late Joan Kagezi. The court proceedings will further shed light on the circumstances surrounding her murder and determine the culpability of the accused individuals.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of individuals working in the justice system. It underscores the need for robust measures to protect those dedicated to upholding justice and prosecuting criminal activities within the country.
