The Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF) is a high-level regional event organized by the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) in partnership with its member states and development partners.
The regional gathering takes place every three years, and this year the Ugandan government, in collaboration with the World Bank and German cooperation, is sponsoring the 7th Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF), which is set to take place in Kampala from October 16–18, 2023 at Speke Resort and Conference Centre.
According to the Nile Basin Initiative website, the event is a science-policy-practice dialogue that provides an opportunity for constructive reflection on contemporary information, knowledge, and best practices, as well as building partnerships among professionals in transboundary water resources management and development.
The theme of the 7th NBDF 2023 is “Deepening Nile Cooperation: Accelerating the Achievement of SDGs in a Changing Climate.” this theme underscores the imperative requirement to effectively implement both structural and non-structural measures to enhance the resilience of the Nile Basin against the adverse effects of climate change.
The Forum is occurring during a period when the region is facing growing consequences of climate change on water resources. These impacts have the potential to worsen existing challenges associated with maintaining the basin in a complex natural environment.
The forum is expected to bring together a diverse range of stakeholders, including ministers, senior government officials, parliamentarians, water resource managers, environmentalists, economists, development planners, academics, researchers, media practitioners, civil society organizations, international NGOs, UN agencies, and representatives from the private sector.
