The Uganda National Road Authority (UNRA) has given Passenger Buses the go-ahead to operate on the Katonga Bridge, along the Kampala-Masaka Highway.

UNRA confirmed the development through a press release dated September 4, 2023.

“Following the continuous technical monitoring and recent assessment conducted for the old existing bridge at Katonga, it has been established that the bridge can withstand loading up to 30 tonnes,” UNRA said.

However, UNRA advised buses to abide by all traffic regulations set forth at a safe approach distance to the bridge as well as the existing signage in order to prevent any problems.

The authority also promised to fully reopen the bridge once all repairs are completed and the road’s safety has been confirmed for all vehicles.

“Currently, works on Phase II of the restoration works at Katonga, which entails the construction of the steel bridge, are ongoing and, upon completion, will enable full restoration of traffic at the Katonga section before permanent works can commence,” UNRA added.

This follows the opening of the Katonga Bridge to taxis, light vehicles, and pedestrians earlier in July 2023. The bridge closed off after it collapsed when the waters of R. Katonga rose, which led to the diversion of traffic via Ssembabule.

The construction was contracted to China Communications Construction Company Ltd.
