The police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, in a police statement, released August 7, 2023, has said that a suspicious phone device connected to a switch was discovered in a bag of a pupil at Murchison Bay Primary School.

“The matter was brought to the administration of the school after concerned pupils saw smoke coming from the bag, they alerted the teachers, who checked and found a phone battery that was connected to a switch and immediately alerted the police,” SCP Enanga said.

The police specialists recovered a suspicious device, which had no specific safety risk to the school. Efforts are now in place, to trace the source of the device, which the pupil says was from their neighbor at home.

Enanga added that the Police Bomb Squad and Kampala Metropolitan East Region continue to investigate the circumstances under which a suspicious phone device connected to a switch was recovered in the bag of the pupil.

He noted that though it is of low risk, the police would like to find out how it found its way into the school.

This calls for more vigilance of the school administrators, staff and students. He advised that daily searches should be conducted thoroughly for any suspicious items.

Putting in mind easy access to homemade bombs on the internet has contributed to concerns about bomb threats, and suspicious devices in schools, playgrounds, vans, and buses.

Enanga revealed that arrangements are now in place by the Counter-Terrorism Units, to train the school administrators, teachers, students, school bus drivers, and support staff on suspicious devices, school safety and emergency preparedness.
