The Minister for Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has asked the government to remove khat, commonly known as Miraa, from the list of prohibited substances. While appearing before the defence and internal affairs committee on Thursday, July 6, 2023, Gen. Otafire told MPs that khat is not that dangerous to warrant its prohibition.

Minister Otafire requested that the concerned authorities regulate those who misuse khat and cannabis, which makes them dangerous. Otafire further noted that in other parts of the world, some countries are reaping the benefits of growing cannabis for medicinal purposes.

“When you compare cannabis to drinking alcohol, you will find that whisky is more dangerous to human life than cannabis because it should be given the same treatment for medicinal purposes and not as a recreational drug,” he said.
