SGA Security Company has confirmed that their security guard identified as Atuhaire Rogers shot himself dead this morning at exactly 9:00 a.m.
Atuhaire Rogers, who had been deployed at Mukwasi House, Lumumba Avenue, Kampala for the past two days, was found dead at the scene. Initial reports suggest that the deceased was discovered by Okudu David, a day guard who had arrived for duty.
David reported hearing the sound of a gun being cocked, assuming it was a routine safety precaution. Upon arrival at the scene, the police made several observations.
Atuhaire Rogers was found lying in a pool of blood, with a bullet wound visible on his throat that had penetrated through his head. Investigations have revealed that Atuhaire was working alongside Namumanya Mary on night duty.
As part of the investigation process, witness statements have been recorded and relevant exhibits have been recovered. Additionally, six individuals have been brought in for questioning to assist in the ongoing investigations.
According to ASP Luke Owesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson of Kampala Metropolitan, a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident will be carried out, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
Just in May alone, this is the 7th victim of gun violence. On May 2nd, the Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, the late Col (rtd.) Charles Engola was shot dead at his home in Kyanja by his body guard, who later shot himself dead.
On May 6, self-styled vlogger Ibrahim Lubega Tusibira, aka Isma Olaxess, aka Jajja Ichuli, was also shot dead in Kyanja by unknown assailants.
Barely a week after blogger Ichuli’s death, on May 12th, a police officer named Ivan Wabwire shot and killed Uttam Bhandari, an Indian businessman and money lender, in cold blood in broad daylight on Parliamentary Avenue.
Just this week, John Okudi, a 27-year-old security guard attached to Saracen (U) Ltd., was allegedly shot on Wednesday by his colleague, Moses Okedi, following a disagreement in senior quarters in Amagoro Central ward in Tororo Municipality, where they had been deployed.
“The increased gun violence can be attributed to many issues depending on the specificity of individual cases, but mostly the issue of mental health cannot be ignored.” said Dr. Mugisa Stephen a mental health specialist.
Dr Stephen added that with this trend of events the public should be cautious while dealing with personnel with guns or else be part of the statistic.
