The heavy downpour in the wee hours of Monday again caused landslides in Kasese district, which destroyed over 26 homes and left 200 locals stranded and homeless.

According to the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS), the incident happened in Butera village, Bughendero parish, Buhurira sub-county, Kasese district on Monday.

“40 households have camped at Kibirigha Roman Catholic Church, 200 households are at risk, and 26 households were demolished,” URCS mouthpiece Irene Nakasiita said on Tuesday morning.

She also added that over six villages in Kyarumba sub-county, Kabonera parish, Kibirigha I, Kibirigha II, Muthambi, Kiitabona, Buthali, and Kasanzi, were affected by landslides.

On Monday, May 1, 2023, the Uganda Red Cross Society revealed that one person died and two were injured after the incident in Bughendero, Buhurira Sub County; a home was severely damaged and seven family members were displaced.

“Land slide kills 1 in Kasese, injures 2, and displaces a family of 7,” URCS tweeted on Monday morning.

According to the locals who are camping at Kibirigha Roman Catholic Church, more life-supporting materials are needed, including food, clean water, warm clothes for children, and blankets, among others.

The Uganda Red Cross Society revealed that the Kasese branch is working tooth and nail to see more affected locals evacuated.

“Our Kasese branch response team is on the ground to support the affected community,” URCS said.

This comes at a time when heavy rains have caused flooding and landslides in different parts of Uganda, including Mbale and Rukungiri districts.
