President Museveni requests more FMD Vaccine Doses from Egypt
In a bid to combat the ongoing Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak affecting Uganda’s livestock, President Yoweri Museveni has requested additional vaccine doses from the Egyptian government. The President, accompanied by First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni, made the request during a meeting with an Egyptian delegation at his Kisozi farm in Gomba District on Sunday, May 26, 2024. Gen. Mohsen Azouz, Director of the Veterinary Service Department in Egypt, confirmed that the delivery of the initial 3 million vaccine doses, received by Uganda on May 23, 2024, was just the beginning of a larger commitment.
UPDF recruitment exercise begins in Rwenzori region
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has commenced a recruitment exercise in the Rwenzori region, covering districts of Kasese, Bundibugyo, Kabarole, Bunyangabu, Ntoroko, Kyenjojo, Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, Kitagwenda, and Fort Portal City. The recruitment process will run from today, Monday, May 27, 2024, until June 1, 2024. Applicants must submit handwritten application letters accompanied by recommendations from LCI, LCIII, GISO, DISO, or RDC/RCC. The UPDF aims to recruit 9,627 regular forces into infantry forces nationwide
Police arrest 10 hardcore criminals in Kampala
The Kampala Metropolitan police have apprehended 10 hardcore criminals who were terrorizing travelers and engaging in robberies. The suspects, mainly captured from Nabweru in Wakiso district, were involved in broad daylight crimes, as highlighted by Luke Owoyesigire, the deputy police spokesperson. Recovered items include mobile phones, a DVD player, army shoes, pangas, iron bars, and 19 kg of opium. The suspects face charges related to possession of dangerous weapons and government stores, marking a significant crackdown on criminal activities in the region.
Nebbi Catholic Diocese to welcome Pilgrims with special Mass before Martyrs Day celebrations
The Nebbi Catholic Diocese is gearing up for a special holy mass on May 29, 2024, to welcome pilgrims ahead of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3, 2024. Archbishop Raphael Wokorach announced the special mass on Sunday, May 26, 2024, while delivering a sermon on faith and discipline at Nebbi Cathedral Parish. Madhvani Group gets green light for sugar factory in Amuru
The Madhvani Group has been granted approval to establish a sugar factory in Amuru District, finally ending a long-standing legal dispute. An agreement was signed on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at President Yoweri Museveni’s residence in Rwakitura, Kiruhura District. This settlement paves the way for the Madhvani Group to construct a multi-million dollar sugar refinery in Amuru. TORORO: Authorities demand dissolution of procurement committee over stalled projects
Authorities in Tororo District are advocating for the dissolution of the district procurement committee due to stalled government projects, with allegations of bribery hindering project completion in the district. Tororo Resident District Commissioner Nixon Owole told journalists on May 26, 2024, that the project delays are attributed to the committee’s acceptance of bribes from contractors. He added despite paying the contractor UGX 162 million, construction has stopped. Additionally, a UGX 121 million mortuary building project at Tororo Main Hospital, remains untouched.

Schools in Mpigi District are grappling with a desperate situation as a new academic term begins on Monday, May 27, 2024. A recent rainstorm wreaked havoc on classrooms and teachers’ houses, leaving several schools unprepared to resume classes safely. LIRA: City clerk Tibihika dies in motor accident
The Lira City Council Clerk, Theophilus Tibihika, has been confirmed dead after getting involved in a fatal accident on Monday, May 27, 2024. The accident reportedly occurred around 6:30 a.m. along the Lira-Apac Highway. Tibihika was driving a Pick up Double Cabin Hilux registration number UAM 450V heading to Kampala. It is said the vehicle overturned severally at Akao, some 15km from Lira City after he had lost control.
LIRA: Over 300 refugees empowered with business skills
More than 300 refugees and residents of host communities in Northern Uganda have received a significant boost for their businesses after completing entrepreneurship training. The training, held at the Northern Uganda Women’s Network for Business Development (NUWENBD), equipped female refugees with valuable skills in income-generating activities like hairdressing, soap making, tailoring, and baking. Beneficiaries hailed from various districts across Northern Uganda, including Obongi, Lamwo, Madi Okollo, and Terego. This initiative formed part of the sh800 billion “GROW” project funded by the World Bank.

Tech giant Microsoft is making a major investment in Kenya with the construction of a $1 billion geothermal-powered data center. This project marks a significant step towards bolstering digital access and cloud computing capabilities in East Africa. Partnering with G42, a leading artificial intelligence (AI) firm from the United Arab Emirates, Microsoft plans to utilize Kenya’s abundant geothermal resources to power the data center. Brad Smith, President of Microsoft, emphasized the transformative nature of this project, calling it “the biggest step to advance the availability of digital technology in Kenya’s history.”
BURKINA FASO: Military Junta extends rule by five years
Burkina Faso’s military junta has extended its rule by five years, postponing the country’s return to civilian governance until 2029. The decision was announced by Col. Moussa Diallo, Chairman of the organizing committee of the national dialogue process, during recent national consultations where participants adopted a new charter setting the transition period at 60 months starting July 2, 2024. The military leader, Capt. Ibrahim Traore, who seized power in a 2022 coup, will be eligible to run for president in future elections under the new charter.
