Why You Should Visit Lake Bunyonyi, Uganda’s Birdwatchers Paradise

As we celebrate end-of-year festivities, families across Uganda and the world should visit Lake Bunyonyi, popularly known as Uganda’s Birdwatchers Paradise.

Located in southwestern Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale districts, Lake Bunyonyi is approximately 448.9 km from Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, via Mbarara-Masaka Rd and Kabale-Mbarara.

Lake Bunyonyi and its surrounding wetlands and forests are home to over 200 bird species, making it a place for birdwatching activities for tourists from around the world.

Some of the bird species found around Lake Bunyonyi include the Pied Kingfisher, Great Cormorant, and Grey Crowned Crane (Uganda’s national bird and a symbol of beauty), African Fish Eagle, Swamp Flycatcher, Malachite Kingfisher, and many more birds.

The abundant birdlife of Lake Bunyonyi has made it a prime destination for birdwatchers, nature photographers, and Eco tourists. The serene environment and absence of large predators add to its beauty.

Birdwatching tours around the lake often involve guided boat rides, where the tourists can explore the lake’s islands and wetlands while spotting various bird species in their natural habitats.

Several migratory species from Europe and Asia visit the lake during the migratory season, which usually lasts from November to April and coincides with the busiest time of year for birdwatching.

Visitors are treated to a remarkable experience as the area comes to life with colorful and melodic birdcalls at this time.
