Uganda’s women’s cricket team, the Victoria Pearls have secured a semifinal place at the ongoing International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers after defeating Namibia by 4 wickets on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Entebbe Cricket Oval.
The Victoria Pearls picked up a second win of the tournament following up on their victory against Rwanda. The win also sent Uganda to the top of Group B.
Uganda won the toss and asked Namibia to bat first putting on 92/10, however, the Pearls outshined with the bat, and reached 93/6 to secure the match.
Uganda’s Anyait Lorna and skipper Consulate Aweko each picked three wickets while Janet Mbabazi, Evelyn Anyipo, and Rita Musamali also picked a wicket each to limit Namibia’s opportunities.
Aweko, then ensured Uganda won the game with an Over spare with her 11 runs.
The Victoria Pearls opened this tournament with another convincing win on Sunday when they beat neighbors Rwanda by 6 wickets.
Namibia alongside Zimbabwe is the top-ranked team in this competition.
In another game earlier on Tuesday, Nigeria defeated Rwanda. Action continues on Wednesday with Kenya facing Botswana, while Zimbabwe takes on Tanzania.
Uganda will return to action on Thursday, December 14, 2023, against Nigeria in their final group game.
The top two teams will qualify for the global qualifiers that will be held in Dubai next year. The 2024 ICC T20 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Bangladesh.
