Uganda Medical Association (UMA), has announced the suspension of the earlier planned industrial action countrywide that was to start Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
According to Dr. Herbert Luswata, the general secretary of UMA, UMA members, Members of the elders forum, colleagues from the Graduate Nurses Association, and pharmacists had a consultative meeting on July 29, 2023, and resolved to suspend the planned country-wide action.
“The meeting resolved that the earlier planned industrial action, which was supposed to start on August 01, 2023 if interns are not deployed, be suspended for now and use other channels to engage the government to collect pending demands,” Luswata said.
He added that the leadership of doctors has resolved to pursue the presidential directive to increase allowances for medical interns and senior house officers from Shs. 1 million to Shs. 2.5 Million each.
UMA has also advised medical interns to report to their respective internship centres as posted by the Ministry of Health.
This follows the government’s consideration of deploying 1,900 medical interns to 58 centres across the country, and promising a monthly pay of Shs. 1 million to each.
