The Uganda Prisons Service and Makerere University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which aims to enhance the legal expertise of prison officers.
The initiative will commence at Prisons Academy and Training School, with 60 Senior Officers currently enrolled in the Prisons Intermediate Command and Staff Course serving as the inaugural cohort.
While speaking at the signing on December 10, 2024, the Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting its potential to elevate professionalism in the service within the Uganda prison.
He underscored that currently 60 senior officers have enrolled in the Prisons Intermediate Command and Staff Course serving as the inaugural cohort.
“They will be the first to benefit from this initiative and the course will be delivered at the Prisons Academy and Training School,” Byabashaija noted.
The Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, commended Dr. Byabashaija for the innovative BUBU initiative, which successfully delivered high-quality furniture for the University Council.
Prof. Nawangwe also expressed optimism about the positive impact of the administrative law course on inmate management, aligned with global standards.
