The twelve-time defending champion Uganda Prison Service Athletics Club has dominated day one of the National Track and Field Championships organised by the Uganda Athletics Federation and the National Council of Sports. The defending champions scooped 10 medals out of 17 finals, claiming a plethora of honours.
The two-day championship, which commenced on Friday, June 28, 2024, at the Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono, shall conclude today, Saturday, June 29, 2024, with less than 12 finals remaining to be competed for.
Day one of the event was highlighted by the spectacular performance put on by the Uganda Prison Ladies’ team. In the track event, Eveline Koli and Stella Wonruku emerged victorious in the 100m and 400m races, respectively, while the Prison Ladies quartet took top honours in the 4x100m relay. Nancy Lakot and Christine Alanyo put on another domineering show by winning the javelin and short put events, respectively.
The remarkable performance of the Uganda Prison Service Athletics Club was equitably put up by their men’s team, which won the 4×100 men’s relay with the quartet of Emmanuel Aboda, Musa Isabirye, Solomon Obutu, and Emmanuel Obong. The prisons team duo of Aboda and Musa came short of a top spot in the 100-metre finals, finishing second and third, respectively.
In the long jump, Moses Komakech’s stunning leap led him to victory, while Ginario Ochen and Johnson Mwaka took top honours in the short put and javelin events, respectively. Daniel Kiprop and Hosea Kiprop finished second and third in the 1500m race, with Nelson Wakano claiming silver in the 10000m race.
Despite this outstanding performance by the UPS Athletics Club, the championship is still set for an epic conclusion today, with UPF, UWA, and MODVA_UPDF, who have set their eyes on day two, looking to turn tables and conclude on a high.
