The State House Anti-Corruption Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate of the Uganda Police Force (CID) arrested Kana Taban, the Senior Procurement Officer (SPO) of Yumbe district, for soliciting a bribe to award a road contract.

Taban was arrested with his accomplice, Anule Siraj of Miribe Foundation Limited.

The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in a statement made on December 20, 2023, said that the arrest took place on December 19, 2023, at around 3:00 p.m.

According to the Anti-Corruption Unit, the SPO was accused of soliciting a Ugx 23 million bribe from Obua Emmanuel, the Managing Director of Apogee Logistics Company, as a condition to award his company a contract.

“The contract was for the construction of the Ibizi water shed culvert and the rehabilitation of 4.3km of Abiriamajo Yangani access road for FY2022-2023,” the Anti-Corruption Unit stated.

“The bribe was paid through a bank account in the name of Miribe Foundation Limited and was withdrawn by the account signatory, Anule Siraj, who delivered it to the Senior Procurement Officer,” the Anti-Corruption Unit added.

Out of the Ugx 23 million that was solicited, Ugx 20 million was recovered from the suspects.

The suspects are currently being detained at Arua Central Police Station as investigations proceed.
