A number of people online have reacted negatively to the supplementary budget presented before Parliament by the Ministry of Finance over the allocation for security.
This criticism seems to be coming from a point of ignorance of the standard operating procedures instituted by the Ministry of Health.
Under these SOPs which outline how measures are to be implemented, security forces are the key implementers nation wide.
It is not possible to imagine a scenario in which relief items like food are distributed to the masses without enforcement.
Whereas many Ugandans are indoors for the period, members of the security fraternity have to put in multiple shifts just to make sure the country keeps on running and exposing themselves selflessly to the virus.
A curfew was also instituted to limit movements at night especially for criminals, it’s only security that can ensure that this is adhered to.
Road blocks have to manned, sensitization has to go on and we should not expect health workers to do this as they are engaged in the medical battle against the virus.
Other facets of the war such as sensitization are also critical though not apparent as buying testing kits may be. However ignorance of the process is just as dangerous in the struggle. The fight to remain relevant by other people also risks derailing the progress being made.
All arguments are in favor of enhancement of security capacities during this period. However we know that there are people who do not have the best interest of Uganda in such matters and would love to see a deteriorating state of affairs. Uganda is in safe hands during this time of tragedy.
