President Yoweri Museveni has responded to the letter written to him by the President of Burundi, Pierre Nkuruzinza addressing the impasse between Rwanda and Burundi.

On 4th December 2018, Nkurunziza through a letter to Museveni raised a number of concerns especially the tense relationship between the two neighboring East African countries.

In his response, Museveni addresses the “Burundi question”, the long running tensions between Hutus and Tutsis in the region including rebel groups like the Interahamwe in DRC and its impact on the current feisty relationship between the two states.

Museveni farther iterates the role of Regional East African block in solving issues of member states and that it would be foolhardy to expect the EAC to keep a blind eye while member states were feuding.

Museveni also critised revolutionary forces that use unconventional means such as indiscriminate violence to achieve their goals citing the various opposition forces that have distabilized Burundi since 2014.

The series of unprecedented interactions between the two heads of state comes on the backdrop of a flopped EAC leaders extraordinary meeting in Arusha, Tanzania in November 2018.

The meeting was postponed to 27th December 2018 and it is hoped that talks to resolve and diffuse the tensions between the warring nations will be held.
