On Wednesday January 25th 2023, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) law enforcement team and Uganda Police Force (UPF) rescued at least 150 of Kampala’s street children as part of a city-wide rescue operation.

The rescued children, who are mostly from Karamoja were picked from various parts of Kampala and taken to Kobulin Youth Rehabilitation and Skilling centre in Napak district for rehabilitation.

According to authorities, a total of 13 suspected child traffickers were also arrested during the operation. The suspects will be taken to court for contravening the Child Protection Ordinance 2022.

According to the Executive Director Dorothy Kisakathey have made good progress with the street children but there is a lot more to be done stating that it is steady progress.

“We have received good reports from the children in Masulita. The children are healthy, they are being trained and rehabilitated. We are grateful to UWESO for providing the facility and the resources for this work,” she said.

According to John Bosco Bashinyora, the Head of Gender Directorate at KCCA, the operation was supported by three local NGOs working under the Local Coalition Accelerator initiative.

He added that their support included fuel equivalent to 720 litres for the bus, coaster, and pickup; meals for the children while in transit and facilitation for the rescue team.

Last year, similar operation was carried out in which 700 children were rescued from the streets and 36 child traffickers convicted

KCCA warns parents to stop abusing their children and instead support them so that they can achieve their full potential. More operations are expected to take place in the future.
