The top leadership of the National Unity Platform (NUP) has urged the former leader of opposition in parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, to seek repentance and forgiveness from them like a true Catholic should before he holds his Thanksgiving prayers in Masaka on June 21, 2024.
Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the deputy spokesperson of NUP, said during an interview on Sanyuka television on June 18, 2024, that he is offering free advice to Mpuuga regarding his planned Thanksgiving prayer event to seek the sacrament of penetensia (penance) first before proceeding to organize the Thanksgiving prayers.
Mufumbiro stated that Mpuuga needs the sacrament of penance, also known as reconciliation or confession, which is a religious rite where a person acknowledges his sins and seeks forgiveness from God and those he has wronged.
“We, as NUP, strongly advise that Mpuuga engage in the sacrament of penance before leading a public Thanksgiving event. Currently, Mpuuga’s sins are beyond redemption; without penance, he is unclear and marred with corruption issues that naturally need cleansing,” Mufumbiro said.
He stated that, as a political figure, Mpuuga’s actions have a great impact on him as a person and the party he alleges to belong to. Since, according to Mufumbiro, his choices are often subject to intense scrutiny, particularly when he is to interact with religious leaders, he needs to be open and clear his conscience by repenting of his wrongdoing.
“Honestly, if I were Mpuuga, I would not hold a Thanksgiving event; I would hold an open repentance, confess all my sins, and beg God for his forgiveness instead of hiding behind religious leaders to hold a Thanksgiving event,” he added.
Mufumbiro went ahead to say that, knowing Mpuuga, he will not heed his advice, stating that he carries himself like he knows it all, which he thinks is Mpuuga’s actual problem.
According to Mufumbiro, Mpuuga is a surface politician, and that is why he hangs around the likes of Medard Ssegona, Abed Bwanika, and Katikiro Charles Magiya.
“Like the saying goes, show me who your friends are, and I will reveal your character. I hear Mayiga is the guest of honour, so you can see the people around him; they are all so full of themselves and don’t listen to and respect authority. Instead of advising him like we have done to repent and acknowledge his mistakes, they surround him with too much English,” Mufumbiro said.
Political experts have said that the NUP leadership is doing everything they can to decampaign and fail Mpuuga’s Thanksgiving event because they are worried that during the event he will rebrand himself. An article published by this website shows how NUP is making sure Mpuuga has little or no turnout at his Thanksgiving.
