The Deputy President of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party in charge of Buganda and former leader of the opposition Mathias Mpuuga has said that he is having formal engagements with Party Members of Parliament to team up and re-organize and gain their party.
According to Mpuuga NUP does not operate as a formal political party, stating that he will not watch its downfall yet he is capable of rebuilding it and making it a strong party suitable to lead the country.
“I am engaging party Members of Parliament to see how we can rebuild our party NUP. Those who wish for me to exit the party should know that I am not going anywhere because NUP is my party. We shall work hard to grow it,” Mpuuga said.
Mpuuga made the revelation during a pressing conference held at the Parliament of Uganda on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.
He said that no one dares to push him out of the party because he is not only a member of NUP but also a founder. He revealed that he sacrificed everything including time, finances, and energy among others to find and build the party to where it is now.
Meanwhile, the fight between NUP’s President Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi alias Bobwine and Mathias Mpuuga has left party MPs divided into two factions. Some are supporting Mpuuga while others Kyagulanyi. Those supporting Mpuuga have accused Bobwine of a lack of national character and incompetence in political matters.
The internal party squabbles stems from the recent media allegations that implicated Mpuuga in the ugly act of corruption at parliament using his position as parliamentary commissioner.
Kyagulanyi has since preached against such acts and condemned Mpuuga demanding he refund the alleged swindled 500 Million, step down from parliamentary commissioner, and apologize.
However, Mpuuga has defied Kyagulanyi’s call stating that he has no corruption stain according to the laws of Uganda and he is willing to meet Kyagulanyi and discuss the matter in depth.
