The National Unity Platform (NUP) party has called for a crisis meeting to discuss the potential replacement of its Secretary General, Lewis David Rubongoya, following the revelations by Mathias Mpuuga, the former Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LOP), that Rubongoya is the brain and sponsor of the People Power Front (PPF), which seeks to neutralize NUP.
The meeting is scheduled for later next week, according to Fred Nyanzi, the brother and political advisor of Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, the President of the NUP.
The meeting aims to address the escalating concerns regarding leadership effectiveness and moles in the party direction.
Sources within the party indicate that dissatisfaction with Rubongoya’s performance was sparked by Mpuuga’s revelations that he is the sponsor behind PPF. This set off Nyanzi, who went running to the brother Bobi Wine and demanded that they hold a crisis meeting as CEC and decide Rubongoya’s fate as SG.
The sources further indicated that Nyanzi stormed Bobi Wine’s home furious and shouted, “Mwana, I told you, Nti bunno obusajja tebwesigika; kati laba, butulidemu olukwe loosely translated, ‘Man, I told you these guys can’t be trusted now; see, they have betrayed us.”
According to the source, Nyanzi noted, “Imagine Rubongoya is the one behind PPF, and he has been among us for so long; no wonder sensitive information always ends up in the public; I demand that you call for CEC and we have him replaced.”
The sources said that there has been a lot of pressure mounting since this revelation, and Nyanzi has not been very kind to Rubongoya; even after Bobi Wine requested Nyanzi to allow him to talk to Rubongoya first and hear his side of the story, he didn’t want to buy the idea.
“What is there to talk about? Mpuuga already told you it is Rubongoya and the brother running PPF, the same group you attacked Mpuuga for sponsoring it. Now that Mpuuga says it’s for Rubongoya, you want to talk to him first? Man, I will not be so patient with these moles; they have to go,” Nyanzi said.
Sources also noted that there is already bad blood between Nyanzi and Rubongoya over the Kampala mayoral seat. Following this new information of Rubongoya sponsoring PPF to neutralize NUP, which did not go well with Nyanzi, he will definitely go after him with everything he has got to remove him from NUP and contest against him for the Kampala mayoral seat.
As the meeting approaches, all eyes will be on the NUP to see how it resolves this internal crisis and whether a leadership change will indeed take place.
