President Gen. Y.K. Museveni has today presided over the pass-out ceremony of 2018 recruit warders and wardresses of Uganda Prison services at Kololo airstrip.
Among them are 1464 warders and 554 wardresses that have been undergoing training at Kitalya Prisons Training camp.
The course started on 5th April 2021 and components included Parade training, Introduction to Law, Human Rights, Self Defence, Political Education, Physical Training, Kiswahili lessons, introduction to Uganda prison services among others.
Warders and wardresses who underwent seven (7) months of training were selected across all districts of the country.
The basic course is to prepare officers for a more challenging and enduring work ahead of them.
The Commissioner-General of Prisons, Dr. Johnson Byabashaija on addressing the graduates, advised the new recruits to stick to the core values of the prisons services or else the law will take its course.
President Yoweri Museveni congratulated the internal affairs ministry and commissioner-general on re-enforcing the prison forces with more manpower.
”Uganda Prisons Service and Police Force should begin-up construction of their own prisons facilities to reduce exploitation tendencies by foreign construction companies to increase on required facilities at low cost ”. Said, Museveni
”The qualified staff in the forces should be given priority to exhibit their skills like engineers instead of trusting projects with foreign companies”. Added the president.
The pass-out was attended by Chief Justice Owiny Dollo, Director General Internal Security Organization Col Charles Oluka, Ministers, and officers from Uganda Police Force; UPDF, and Uganda Prison Service.
The main aim of the training is to produce officers who appreciate the culture of the prison service and values, security of offenders, issues of professionalization, and respect human rights.
Best trainee recruit warder 17708 Aliong Machel Jude was awarded as outstanding in leadership and 19731 warder Fred Wolenga as best male academically and overall, female category 18413 wardress Kyomutai Lomai and these had a photo with the president.
Initially, the recruits were over 2084 at the start of the training, and 57 fallout due to different indiscipline grounds and health-related issues that prompted them to be dismissed.
