The Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataha Museveni, encouraged private schools and educational institutions to adopt the Education Management Information System (EMIS) for improved planning.

She delivered this plea on December 3, 2024, remarks during a gathering of private school owners at Green Hill Academy in Kibuli.

Minister Museveni highlighted that many private schools have not shared important information about their students and staff.

“We do not yet know how many teachers and academic staff they have,” she said. She pointed out that over 50% of private schools have not provided the number of learners they serve, making it difficult for the government to plan effectively.

The minister also urged private school owners to stop hiring government teachers for extra jobs. She expressed concern that these teachers struggle to balance their duties, which can lead to lower performance in both roles. Many government teachers take on private school jobs to earn extra money, but this practice can affect the quality of education they provide.

During the meeting, private school owners discussed challenges they face, such as financial issues and regulations. Minister Museveni’s call for the adoption of EMIS is part of a larger effort to modernize Uganda’s education system. By using this system, schools can improve their planning, enhance student outcomes, and better meet the demands of today’s educational environment.
