The State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SHACU), in a joint operation with the Criminal Investigations Directorate of Uganda (CID1_UG) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), has apprehended Annah Asiimwe, who stands accused of obtaining money by false pretense, forgery, and uttering false documents.

According to the Anti-Corruption Unit on June 10, 2024, Asiimwe has been arraigned before the Chief Magistrates Court in Mbarara and has been remanded to prison until her next court appearance on July 9, 2024.

“This arrest serves as a warning to those who may be tempted to engage in such fraudulent activities,” the ODPP’s representative said.

The accused is alleged to have fraudulently obtained millions of shillings from several victims by falsely claiming to be the biological daughter of the late Bishop Paul Bakyenga.

The complainants noted that they will not hesitate to pursue and prosecute individuals who seek to take advantage of others through deceit and manipulation.

“This is a clear case of fraud and deception, where the suspect exploited the trust and goodwill of unsuspecting victims for personal gain,” the lead investigator from SHACU said.

Under this pretext, Asiimwe allegedly forged share certificates from MTN, the World Bank, and letters purporting to be from the late bishop and the Catholic Church, claiming that the bishop had shares in organizations including the World Bank, MTN, Ford Motors, and various petrol stations, all of which turned out to be false.

“We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and those who engage in such criminal activities are held accountable,” the lead investigator said.

The investigations in the case are still ongoing, and the authorities have urged any additional victims to come forward and assist in the prosecution of the case.
