The territorial police in Greater Masaka and Kalungu districts have in custody 37-year-old Ssenyondo George, a peasant and resident of church ward, Lwengo Town Council, Lwengo District, at Kyamulibwa Health Centre IV after he suffered injuries in an act of attempted suicide.
SCP Enanga Fred, the police spokesperson, said in a press release on September 4, 2023, that the suspect allegedly killed his two children, Namateregga Tina, 3, and Jorum, 5, and attempted to murder the third child. He then attempted to commit suicide.
“On September 2, 2023, at around 11 a.m., Mutebi Akaya, the chairman LC1 of Lwanume “A” village, Kyamulibwa subcounty, Kalungu district, reported an incident where two dead bodies, a male and a female juvenile, were abandoned under a mango tree at Lwanume Catholic Church,” Enanga stated.
He added that Nakabingo Fina, aged one and a half years, clad in a red-white dress, was found alive and crying under the same mango tree.
According to Enanga, the police at Kyamulibwa in Kalungu district built on the information received and traced the origin of the victims.
“The father of the victim, who was the prime suspect behind their double murder and attempted murder, was then identified,” Enanga said.
He added that the suspect had a domestic dispute with his wife, Namirimu Florence, from Lwengo, which resulted in him taking their children from her and transporting them to their grandmother’s place in Kalungu, who refused to take them in due to a lack of resources and advised her son to take them to their grandfather’s home.
“It was during that process that the suspect developed a motive of killing his children and taking his own life too,” Enanga narrated.
Enanga said that Nakabingo was medically examined, found to be out of danger, and handed over to the Home Free NGO at Lukaya for proper care.
“The suspect was rushed to St. Joseph’s Kyamulibwa Health Centre IV, where he is being guarded. Upon recovery, he will be charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder,” Enanga said.
The police strongly condemn such cruel and inhuman acts of violence and continue to urge the public to seek help if they are victims of domestic violence or abuse by calling the Child and Family Protection Unit on 0800 199195.
