Kampala Metropolitan Police has started investigations into the circumstances under which a Makerere University professor died after his body was found floating in the waters of Lake Victoria.

The deceased has been identified as Julius Mugaga, a resident of Kasubi in Rubaga division.

According to preliminary reports, Mugaga’s body was found floating in the waters of Lake Victoria by fishermen from Senene Island.

While being interviewed by journalists on May 17, 2024, Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said that police got a report on May 16, 2024, in the afternoon about a body that was found floating in the waters of Lake Victoria, and it was discovered by fishermen on Senene Island.

Onyango added that when Mugaga’s body was retrieved from the water, he still had his shoes on, a phone in his pockets, and an equity bank withdrawal slip that showed he had last withdrawn money from his bank account on May 13, 2024.

“We were able to identify Mugaga’s identity through the many missed calls we found on his phone, and luckily one of the missed calls was from his brother, Alex Ssebuwufu, whom we called, and he told us about the identity and relationship he had with the deceased,” Onyango revealed.

He also said that Ssebuwufu told them that they had reported a missing person’s case to the Kawaala Police on May 15, 2024.

“Ssebuwufu reported the day his brother went missing; however, it is so unfortunate that he was found dead,” Onyango stated.

Onyango added that a formal statement will be released soon after thorough investigations are done.
